Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during the first Acupuncture visit?

During first –time visit and consultation the practitioner will take detailed medical history, which can include bringing the lab tests results, scans, or any other relevant medical information.

For general acupuncture visit wear loose, comfortable clothing, and try to relax and unplug from the busy outside world in order to get a full benefits of the treatment.

Acupuncture is typically painless. Some patients report feeling slight pain when needle is inserted, and sensation of pressure, which usually dissipate shortly after the thin needle being placed on the acupoints. The practitioner will check with you to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed. Only highest quality, single use sterile needles are used during the treatment.

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

The risks of acupuncture are low if you have a competent, certified acupuncture practitioner using sterile needles. Common side effects include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted. Single-use, disposable needles are now the practice standard, so the risk of infection is minimal.    Before having acupuncture treatment, be sure to tell the practitioner if you:

  • Have a bleeding disorder. Your chances of bleeding or bruising from the needles may be increased if you have a bleeding disorder or if you’re taking blood thinners.
  • Have a pacemaker. Acupuncture that involves applying mild electrical pulses to the needles may potentially interfere with a pacemaker’s operation.
  • Are pregnant. Some acupuncture points are thought to stimulate labor, which could result in a premature delivery.

Although both, dry needling and acupuncture involve insertion of the thin needles into the certain parts of the body, the practitioner training, purpose of needling, and placement of the needles all differ.

Dry needling often performed by physical therapists or chiropractic, and can be utilized after as little as 40 hours of training. It’s a relatively new practice, and used to treat pain by stimulating the trigger points.

Alternatively, Acupuncture is a part of ancient practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners will have studied for many years for degree level training, and provide comprehensive knowledge and view of the body in order to treat many conditions of the body as a whole.

Health insurances plans are increasingly covering acupuncture to treat a chronic pain and more. Typically, patients will pay for treatment and reclaim the cost through their insurers, where we provide receipt and treatments reports as requested.
